How do I use Multi-Factor Authentication?

Learn how to set up and use Multi-Factor Authentication in Fisher Funds Online (portal and mobile app).

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your account. You can think of it as installing a comprehensive security system for your home. It doesn't just add an extra lock; it provides multiple layers of protection to keep you safe. In addition to entering your usual username and password, MFA asks you to enter a one-time code when you log in to your account.

When you set up MFA you can choose to have this generated by an authenticator app or sent to you via SMS (text message). Since each code is unique and expires within 5 minutes, it makes it much harder for anyone else to access your account.

You can set up MFA in either the Fisher Funds Online portal or in the mobile app.

Set up MFA

  1. Log in to your Fisher Funds Online account.

    • In the portal, go to My Details.

    • In the mobile app, tap the More tab.

  2. Under Multi-Factor Authentication, select Set up MFA.

    • Choose how you want to receive your authentication codes. You can set it up using an authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator), and/or SMS text message.

If you choose an Authenticator App (Recommended)

  1. Select Use an app.

    • On desktop a QR code will appear.

    • On mobile a one-time setup code will appear.

  2. Open your authenticator app. If you don’t have one, download an app such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator from Google Play or the App Store.

  3. Add a new account in your authenticator app:

    • In Google Authenticator, tap the + icon.

    • In Microsoft Authenticator, tap the QR code icon.

  4. Connect your account:

    • If you’re accessing your Fisher Funds Online account on a desktop, scan the QR code using your authenticator app.

    • If you’re accessing your Fisher Funds Online account on your mobile device, select Enter code manually in your authenticator app and paste the one-time setup code shown in your Fisher Funds Online account.
If you don’t see the code, select Trouble scanning? to reveal it.

  5. Once added, your authenticator app will generate a 6-digit time-based code. The code refreshes automatically – If it expires, you will need to use a new code.

  6. Enter the 6-digit code from your authenticator app in your Fisher Funds Online account and select Continue.

  7. You’ll be shown a recovery code. Save this somewhere secure. You’ll need it if you lose access to your device.

  8. Once you’ve confirmed that you have recorded the code and selected Continue, you’ll see MFA marked as On.

  9. The next time you log in with your username and password, you’ll be prompted to enter the 6-digit code from your authenticator app. A new code is generated automatically every time you sign in, adding an extra layer of protection to your account.

If you choose to use SMS

  1. Enter your New Zealand mobile number and select Continue. Make sure the number matches the one we already have on file for you.

  2. We’ll send a 6-digit one-time code to your phone.

  3. Enter the 6-digit code in your Fisher Funds Online account and select Continue.

  4. You’ll be shown a recovery code. Save this somewhere secure. You’ll need it if you lose access to your device.

  5. Once you’ve confirmed that you have recorded the code and selected Continue, you’ll see MFA marked as On.

  6. The next time you log in with your username and password, you’ll be prompted to enter the 6-digit one-time code to your mobile phone. A new code is generated automatically each time you sign in, adding an extra layer of protection to your account.

Turning off MFA or managing your MFA factors

  1. Log in to your Fisher Funds Online account.

    • In the portal, go to My Details.

    • In the mobile app, tap the More tab.

  2. Under Multi-Factor Authentication, select Manage up MFA.

  3. To disable a factor:

    • Turn off the factor you want to remove.

    • You will prompted to re-enter your login credentials and then enter the one-time code from your authenticator app or SMS text message to confirm the change.

    • Once disabled, you’ll see a message confirming that the factor has been removed.

    • If this is the only factor you are enrolled in, MFA will be turned off entirely. Note: Without MFA, your account will no longer have an additional layer of protection.

You can turn MFA back on at any time by following the Set up MFA process above.

How does MFA work?

Once you’ve set up MFA, you’ll use it each time you log in to Fisher Funds Online – whether you’re accessing your account through the portal or the mobile app. If you use biometric identification (your fingerprint of Face ID) to log in to the mobile app, you’ll only be asked to enter a MFA code when you first set it up, when setting up a new device, or after certain app updates.

  1. Log in with your username or email and password.

  2. You’ll then be asked to enter a login code.

  3. This code will be sent to you via SMS (text message) or generated by your Authenticator App (for example Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator).

  4. Check your phone for the code. If you’re using an Authenticator App, open it on your mobile device.

  5. Enter the code in the box on the screen to complete your login.
