Can I take a break from contributing to my KiwiSaver account?

Once you've been contributing to KiwiSaver for 12 months you can apply for a savings suspension.

Updated over a week ago

If things get tight, or priorities change, you can take a break from contributing for a while. After contributing to KiwiSaver for a minimum of 12 months you can apply to Inland Revenue for a savings suspension of between 3 and 12 months.

It’s important to note that your employer doesn’t have to make contributions while you’re on a savings suspension, and your government contribution may also be affected.

Taking a savings suspension can make a significant difference to the amount of money you’ll have at retirement, so it’s important to consider this carefully before taking a break from contributing.
